![]() ![]() It operated on money skimmed from the Marshall Plan, which offered billions to the free world to repair damage done by the second world war and to create an American economic and political barrier against the Soviets.Īllen Dulles, a future head of the CIA, acted as a consultant to the plan and was party to a secret deal that set aside unaccountable cash for political warfare. Although accountable to government, the CIA was extra-legal. ![]() The organisation was founded in 1947 in response to the threat of communism, but was compromised from the start by competing methodologies: one believing in the patient gathering of secret intelligence through espionage, the other in taking battle to the enemy through covert action. Failure to assimilate leaves them reliant on bought loyalties and purchased intelligence, both easily turned, and therein lies the weakness of the CIA. The same point is implicit in Weiner's highly critical account of the CIA: when it comes to intelligence, Americans stand out as Americans, making them poor spies. The joke of the film, of which Lang must have been aware, was that Cooper could never have been mistaken for anything other than an American. Cloak and Dagger, a second world war piece of Hollywood propaganda directed by German émigré Fritz Lang, casts Gary Cooper as a spy behind Nazi lines. ![]()

![]() ![]() Initially, the book was very slow and confusing and I just didn’t like the voice or style of writing having never read a book by Megan Miranda. The premise was pretty interesting back then, and I didn’t realise until recently that it’s basically about reincarnation but when science gets involved like it always does. Soulprint is one of those books I got on a total whim so it’s no surprise that I only picked it up after two years (?) of owning it. Can Alina change her future, or is she fated to repeat her past and face the consequences? ![]() And she may not be as innocent as she once believed. When Alina finally breaks out of prison, helped by a group of people with unclear motives, she begins to uncover clues left by her past life that only she can decipher. With the science of soul-printing now a reality, she is ‘protected’ for her own safety – and the safety of others – because her soul has done terrible things …or so she’s told. ![]() Alina Chase has spent her entire life in confinement. ![]() ![]() ![]() She starts to doubt herself and to give up on bringing the family together, and the boys finally begin to notice her contributions to their home. The Challenger explosion shakes all their worlds, especially Bird’s. ![]() Each sibling’s story is told in alternating chapters, showing their perspective about this event and the other happenings in school and at home. Cash is feeling like he’s not good at anything after failing seventh grade the first time and getting cut from the basketball team. Fitch loves hanging out at the arcade playing video games, but struggles with his anger. Bird is a good student, passionate about space exploration, who longs for her family to be closer. Summary: Bird, Fitch, and Cash are siblings in the seventh grade (Bird and Fitch are twins, and Cash was held back a year), but their orbits rarely intersect. ![]() ![]() Acclaimed creators Peter Hogan (2000 AD, Tom Strong) and Steve Parkhouse (Milkman Murders, Doctor Who) deliver a truly unique sci-fi adventure tale with heart and humor!" The narrator complains that her husband will not listen to her worries about her condition, and treats her like a child.
